A Seal Upon the Heart

When eleven-year-old Leonardo and his eight-year-old sister find out that their father has been diagnosed with an illness that will certainly lead to his death, they are devastated. But when they learn through a television commercial about a life sciences company called Elixir that is researching human longevity -- essentially a "cure to death," a they call it -- the kids know they have to find out how the company can help their dad.

After running away to New York where the company is based, they sneak into the company's building and discover something so earth-shattering, it changes the very essence of who they are. Their discovery leads them on a quest to bring life back to their father, before times runs out.

Hatefi's emotional and authentic writing is at the core of this novel, which is based on his own cancer journey and his reflection on the fragility of life and the power of love. The author's writing has a rawness and deeply affecting manner that brings to life the sense of enduring love that the story's family experiences, one that can only come from the author's own lived experience. This evocative story is full of hope and the invicibility of life whose appeal will cross over to middle-graders and adults alike. A pefect read for deep discussion about family, loss, and the boundlessness of love.
